“Since the era of slavery, black self love had been absent in our communities,” Jacobs says. “By its continual projection of challenging empowering knowledge, the genre of rap has been instrumental in breaking black self hate’s legacy.”
But, according to Jacobs, a distinction needs to be made between black male selflove and the black male down low.
